Interesting short article with photograph:
Union Pacific crews are upgrading several railroad crossings.
During Monday’s work near East 19th and East Walnut in Des Moines, crews made an interesting discovery.
While digging up the old asphalt, they found the old trolley system, which used to run from the Capitol to the fairgrounds.
Workers say surprisingly the bricks are still in good shape.
“We thought it was kind of cool, some old history. We’ve got some older gentleman on the gang that used to ride it from the Capitol to the fairgrounds so it’s pretty good history,” Union Pacific’s Steve Roberts said.
The Union Pacific crews say you will see them along that same railroad line for the next couple of days working on crossings.
