Subject has come up here before. Issue is basic material: steel expands when hot, contracts when cold. Range of temps too much, it kinks in summer or breaks in winter. Signals catch the breaks. Nothing but luck catches the kinks.

Obvious solution is what some high speed lines have used for years: expansion joints. Of course, that's another thing that needs maintenance...
