Interesting comparison

Here's an interesting item for thought. Of course, the "rebuild" they are listing will basically create a brand new locomotive with recycled frame, trucks and some cab components.

$1.5 million in 2014 dollars equals about $169,600 in 1955 dollars. In 1955, a brand new GP9 cost about $185,000.

So, the fact is that this is actually costing just a bit less to rebuild to basically brand new condition than it cost brand new in the first place. And to give the full comparison, $185,000 in 1955 would be about $1.63 million today.
