Railroading east of Butte, Montana

I have noticed while traveling East on I-90 leaving Butte, Montana, there are railroad tracts on a steep grade headed toward the Continental Divide. What's the scoop on these tracts ? It EXTREMELY rocky terrain. Are these tracts out of service ?
