The old road was gated several years ago at the Anderson Road end, right at Anderson. You can still park there and walk in, since the road is most often away from the track a bit. It's been about 5 years since the people moved in and electric-fenced the whole north side of the BNSF R/W from Anderson Rd all the way into town to pen in their flocks of sheep. That ended access to a really nice afternoon angle from the bluff looking towards Anderson.
Lower down the canyon, the cyclists are making another attempt to pave the old UP/MILW roadbed and connect the Fish Lake trailhead to Spokane. That gets into a really tricky situation since the trail would have to cross the mainline at the UP Jct/Lakeside Jct. complex--which the BNSF will allow to happen over their cold, dead body.
