I'm keenly interested in what the EMD 70ACE demo's are doing at progress rail in Tacoma. Me thinks some sort of prime mover swap may be in the works.
The new engines in med/hvy duty trucks are pure rubbish. You are correct if (more like when) the emissions system fails, the engine derates or shuts down and you are stuck.
I would not be surprised though, that if exhaust aftertreatment is applied to locomotives that they will not revert to shutdown or low power for safety reasons. You would not want to lose your ability to generate air or excitation current for dynamic braking should the DPF / SCR decide its not working correctly.
I think they will go the high speed diesel engine route, rather than the 265h. These emissions ststems are so finicky and short lived, that the robustness and longevity of an existing Tier 4 high speed diesel is no longer the weak point. Slap in a C175-20 or whatever the new CAT model is with its Tier 4 aftertreatment system and replace it with whatever the new Tier 5 is when the emissions system and engine fail after 5 years. They become throwaway engines.
DEF storage on a locomotive is a triffle too. There is nowhere near the same concern for weight as in an OTR truck application.
