BOB2, I do agree that electrification is not cheap, and it can play out its advantages best with high density lines, and even better when it gets mountainous. Or in an urban/suburban environment with high frequency.
Locomotives for heavy haul do exist (for example the Bombardier Traxx for LKAB (Kiruna - Narvik in Sweden/Norway), or the Siemens Vectron (the new Amtrak locomotive is a Vectron) type could be made to a heavy haul unit).
In a high frequency environment, regenerative braking also pays off. With the newest technology, up to 60% of the energy can be regenerated and made available for other trains. And one nice side effect is that pushers can become high performance brakers when going downhill, and easily keep the train stretched without air brakes.
