PG&E DC power was 600 volts, the same as streetcars used. The St. Francis Hotel had emergency lights throughout that used 5 bulb strings like the streetcars. The elevators used DC power until the 1970's (?) when they were replaced with modern machines. The hotel also had a small generator that supplied AC power where needed for critical purposes.
DC power was used by theaters because arc lights require DC power. Most of the spotlights and movie projectors used arc lamps. Stage lights used resistance dimmers that would work on AC or DC.
