PL is short for The Pacific Lumber Company, which at one time dominated much of the redwood lumber industry south of Humboldt Bay, California. Their principle sawmill was in Scotia, CA, which also happens to be a company town owned by the company, although they are either in the process of or have just finished privatizing the town. PALCO operated a private logging railroad into the 1970's before shutting down, with the in-plant switching railroad lasting until around 1990. The company fell victim to a corporate raider type who destroyed the company. Scotia (as DHB noted) is on the old Northwestern Pacific mainline south of Eureka. The daylight coaches first came to this railroad in the mid-1980's as part of the North Coast Daylight passenger excursions operated over the then-Eureka Southern Railroad. The coaches operated into the mid- to late- 1990's on the North Coast Railroad.
