But what are you going to do when that hard drive quits working? It will, you know. You're better off storing pictures on a CD disc. Make several copies and keep them in different locations.

How long will a CD disc last? That is not known. Some manufacturers clain 20 years or more. I would copy them every ten years or so to be safe.

Mass produced discs use a different process for recording data. They may well last 100 years or more.
