Todat's digital will vanish.
What MArgaret said- ya gotta migrate to the latest coolest hooee thing, or you'll be strung out on magnetic tape trying to score a floppy.
And usually, re-recording anything involves at least a small loss.
No big deal? Look at inflation of only a few percent a year, or compound interest.
Silver film on non- nitrocellulose lasts a looooooong time- just keep it cool and dry.
For that matter , nitro-based negs in individual sleeves, cool and dry have lasted , and will continue.
NOw then, more and more movies are made digitally - all those special effects.
BUT
the thing that helps keep real film on the market is that the folks who value their digital movie work
BACK IT UP ON FILM
The big agrreement to continue to make it IIRC will be up for renewal- we'll see what happens.
Maybe those digital movie folks will come up with a failsafe digital storage mechanism.
I figured out long ago that a freezer full of negatives was a lot less hassle than piles of CD vaporware- [ by scanning slides to the highest res available- it wasn't high]you realize that home market CDs are based on a reaction of dyes- not permanent pits in the plastic.
Then again , a 1280x1024 image may be fine on a tv screen , but it aint' squat compared to an image from a neg or transparency on paper.
And we're due for another electromagnatic storm from the sun ' real soon now'
The last really big known one, in the 1880s, knocked out the telegraph system- and that was wires. Just think what it could do to your chips, hard drives, thumb drives, cell phone etc etc etc.
