I never gave it much thought until your question but from about 1992 to 2004 I listened to the scanner here on the Coast line and it was obvious that many of the MOW crew were Hispanic and I learned later that whole "dynasties" of Hispanic families worked for the SP (and probably other railroads) so yes, they may have come initially as "unskilled" but as with the field workers, they became "skilled". And as growers who employed 'unskilled" people, yes------but they became skilled as they worked. Now that I think about it, are you using the word "unskilled" for "untrained" or possibly "illiterate"? I don't mean to start an argument or flame war, just curious as to where we put the word "unskilled".
