When (not if) a magnitude 7.5 or greater earthquake occurs on the White Wolf, Garlock or other faults in the Tehachapi area, how many years will take to rebuild the collapsed sections of the "Great Grapevine Tunnel" under Tejon Pass?
In the 1952 Kern County earthquake (M7.3), southeast of Bealville 18 in thick reinforced concrete railroad tunnel walls were cracked, tracks were warped, and the gap between tunnel entrances was reduced by up to 8 ft 2 in. Repairs, including daylighting 2 tunnels, took months.
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake in the Tehachapis will cause heavy and widespread damage the southern San Joaquin Valley, I-5 over the Tehachapis and well into Los Angeles and Southern Califoria. One credible estimate by CalTech is 300K buildings destroyed, $218B in damages, 270K displaced people, 50K injuries and 1800 deaths.
EQ risk assessment for Southern California prepared by CalTech.
CalTech report
It would be a colossal waste of money to drill a 10 mile railroad tunnel under the Grapevine. There is not enough money in California to 'earthquake-proof' such a pipe-dream. Repairing the CAHSR Great Grapevine Tunnel will way down on the priority list.
