Modern engineering can and does make easy accommodation for a mere 7.5 quake. You've seen too many commercials for amusement parks who showed a train derailing during an earthquake. It's a filmmaker fantasy. ut, if you'd actually worked with the real Dr. Lucy Jones, you'd not place this eventuality very high on the actual risks.

Tunnels are actually in the ground that's moving and so usually suffer little damage. At displacement points on the Hollywood-Malibu fault system we built extra room in the Red Line for displacement.

There are hundreds of rail and highway tunnels in various geology that cross faults in high active earthquake zones, and almost no evidence that with modern engineering, of any significant risk of failure. It's actually structures that are much more likely t absorb the earthquake shocks and be damaged, largely depending on quake depth, shaking, intensity ground water, and geology either which can either increase or dampen the motion waves.

There's plenty not to like about the way CHSRA is doing things, but this earthquake red herring is just nimby nonsense pandering to the general public ignorance and ill education.
