So Sorry to hear about The Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe going preppy. It was home of the BEST Rib Eye steak I've ever had; great Pork Chops too. The family used to vacation @ Pismo Coast Village RV park 2 or 3 times a year; we'd all pile into my dad's 1961 VW, with its' 36 Horsepower motor, and putt - putt down the back roads to Far Western. My dad's shop foreman knew the owners.
Poisoned by a Grilled Cheese Sandwich ??? That cook could probably screw up a $#!t sandwich too...
Funny to read about liquor laws -- Arizona vs. California. As a kid I looked forward to weekends at The Parker Strip along the Colorado River. Back then, Arizona had a age 19 minimum drinking limit, whereas Cali's was always 21. Didn't know about the earlier curfew; I was probably passed out by then anyways.
Here in Seattle, I discovered Gordo's Burgers by simply following the crew of the Ballard Terminal RR when they brought their setout up to the BN interchange, just North of Bridge 4 over the Ballard Locks. Alas, Gordo sold out and retired, the joint is now Oriental & fish heads.
Another place where rails ate was right across the street from Tacoma Amtrak. They were open 24 / 7, and even had Union waitresses. The slab is all that's left.
