Certainly James J. Hill was a great man, but if you are referring to the Great Northern Railroad, it certainly had grades greater than 1%. For instance, the original Cascade Tunnel itself had a 1.7% grade eastbound with an overall ruling grade of 2.2%. Even after the new Cascade Tunnel and alignment was built, the new tunnel grade itself is lower at 1.56%, but the ruling grade is still 2.2%.
