Pinsly still has a very viable network of shortlines in Florida, particularly the Florida Central. While it has not been determined yet, the FCEN is widely expected to get freight rights to switch customers along the now state-owned SunRail corridor in Orlando metro. With CSX shifting virtually all of their hub operations from Taft (Orlando) to the recently opened intermodal facility in Winter Haven, FL there is not much motivation for them to maintain local operations at Taft just to service various carload customers.
Pinsly is the second shortline holding company to scale back its operations to a smaller region. Gulf & Ohio Railways (another older holding company) took similar actions a few years ago.
Other holding companies are aggressively seeking to grow, as we see here. While G&W and Watco gain a lot of attention with some big acquisitions, OmniTrax is in the background looking to expand their portfolio, as well. You could see them making some more buys in the coming months.
It is definitely getting to the point where independent shortlines are becoming the exception, rather than the norm.
