Before I retired 3 yrs. ago, I belonged to the Oregon State Defense Force, a group of volunteer, military veterans formed into a parallel unit to the Oregon National Guard, under orders of the Governor. We assisted the Guard when needed, especially during the many recent deployments overseas, and worked on many missions around our area. Our main mission, though, was to provide emergency communications between the Oregon military leaders and Governor, and each County Sheriff's Emergency Manager unit, when a disaster is declared. We had Ham radio training, and access to all functions of all units involved with any natural or manmade disaster. What we trained most on was the upcoming big earthquake off the Oregon coast. The Big One will be just part of the disaster, depending on your location, with tsunami on the coast, general panic, and here in the Willamette Valley, broken dams with massive flooding. Anything is possible, and a lessening of the smaller daily quakes is a sign of a lockup of the plates, with resulting pressure build up. So, I just watch all the trains I can now, keep my bag packed, and stay ready to take the last one out of this station.
