In MDO chronicles on trainorders.com Mike Ongerth writes about how the rents in SF went sky high in the late 70's and all the warehouse and intermodal and industries took flight for lower rents in Oakland and Union City and what not. And later moved even further east into the central valley.
MDO writes that the SP continued to offer very good service to customers around the clock, long after the customer base justified such an investment, right up until Bayshore was closed as a freight yard in '78--I don't know if that's the right date.
