Interesting that they call this a new innovation. Back in 1992 I watched UP run trains from Long Beach to Salt Lake City that were as large as the trains in this video. On one occasion UP ran a, APL train with 6 of their new C40-8s on the point, 250 platforms all loaded and a set of SD-40s as manned helpers all the way from Long Beach to Caliente, NV before the cut off the helpers.
When the head end crew changed out, they put a new crew on the helpers. As I recall those trains set a record for the longest manned helper operation.
