Yes, according to 'Southern Pacific in Oregon", SP built and briefly ran some mills way up the Mohawk River valley, northeast of Eugene and Springfield. Since they were hauling the logs and lumber already from other mills, and there was lots of timber in those days, SP thought they would cut out the middle man, and make their own lumber. Seems they built the mills, or cut their logs, on land that was not completely theirs. That's where the government made them stop, and maybe for other reasons, also.
