In the summer of 1959 I got the chance to visit in Altoona with a relative in the extended family and who was retired from the Pennsylvania. I believe he had been a hostler.

He told me the T-1's were not popular - they were dirty - smoke went in to the engineer's face - and they slipped. He also did not like the J class 2-10-4's as the main rods were too heavy and did damage. The K-4 seemed to be the locomotive of choice.

I'd opt for a new 6000 class NYC Niagara with a modern boiler not made of high carbon steel that cracks.
