Before you can build your favourite locomotive, you have to be able to pay for it. After it has built you have to have main line excursions to run it and make more money for maintaining the thing. This the British do very well as passenger trips run frequently almost all year long but with the railways in the US, it would be virtually impossible. Add to this being the litigious side of the pond and it is not difficult to see the problems.

The main difference, simply put, is that Network Rail is in charge of the track and each railway pays to run their trains on it. Likewise, excursion companies have the same right to run their trains along with the big boys. Each are allocated timing and paths to keep everybody on the right track!

Can you ever see that happening over here?
