Oh please. Before you complain that the sky is falling, do a little research. There is bus service every 2 hours between PDX and Corvallis. I know, I rode it yesterday. And there is local bus service between Albany's Amtrak station and Corvallis (hint, it is called the Linn-Benton Loop).
Most will rent cars anyway, because there are some not so well kept railfanning secrets in the general area.
And Corvallis is not in the middle of nowhere, the combined population of Albany and Corvallis is over 100,000, not including the suburban sprawll outide city limits. If only it was in the middle of nowhere, and the combined population as 15,000 and Millersburg didn't exist, Philomath was only 500, and Tangent was only 150, but I digress....
