Stash and JohnWest,
I can see where you're coming from, if you're saying the building is not worth saving. That's one thing--although lots of people in San Rafael feel very differently. But the editorialist at the IJ is actually making the case that there is nothing original in the current building, nothing historical. A blatant and gross lie.
The entire first floor exterior of that building is the 1942 version of the depot. The entire facade facing the tracks--first floor--is indistinguishable from the first floor in all the historic photos of the depot after WWII. What differences there are between the current building and the post-WWII version are arcade arches/breezeway filled in with walls/windows.
No different from the MV depot. The Larkspur depot. The B st. depot. All of which have been gutted on the interior.
Now obviously, those depots, not really haven't been added on to vertically if at all, look like the 1928 original.
But this idea that the old San Rafael depot being a mere ghost is just sophistry.
