Here in the Portland (OR) area trains are referred to by symbol...for instance a yard job YBA55 is a yard job operating out of Barnes Yard. The YBR83 operates out of Brooklyn Yard. A twist to this is the OC Switcher LIL75 which operates out of a small depot in the Clackamas industrial area..hence L(local) IL (Industry Lead) 75 which operates out of the Clackamas "doghouse" as it's called and switches the industrial park and goes to Canby (MP 747) to pull the Oregon Pacific traffic on Friday nights.

Locomotive numbers are usually not used except to contact the dispatcher for mainline authority which is only necessary on Friday nites to go to Canby or enter the controlled siding at Clackamas.
