News just reported that driver has been released based on the determination his actions were just a "big mistake". So apparently no criminal charges will be filed. Wonder if he keeps his driver's license?
I agree he wasn't the first one by any means to turn down the tracks at a crossing, but how can this be prevented to at least limit future occurrences regardless of who is driving what vehicle? I did see the mayor mention the day of the accident that the feds should give them the money to build a "flyover", so I'm not sure if he mean the roads or the tracks to go over the top. He either said $30 million or $300 million (I don't remember) and that the local government couldn't justify it, nor did he expect it from the state. Also recall hearing claim this was the 23rd most dangerous grade crossing in the state. Even at $30m each, if the feds paid for the 25 worse xings that would be 3/4 of a billion just for California.
It would be cheaper just to quit running the trains.
