Re: Tunnel 14 on Siskiyou Line?

As listed in Altamont Press' Northwest Region Timetable # 8, Tunnel # 14 is located at milepost 414.6 of Central Oregon & Pacific's Siskiyou Subdivision, between the stations of Siskiyou & Steinman. This would place the tunnel North of Tunnel # 13 at Siskiyou Summit. As described in Signor's book Rails in the Shadow of Mount Shasta: " One of the more spectacular feats in the Siskiyou Mountains is the loop at milepost 415. The track, dropping down the grade, enters tunnel # 14 and makes a 14 - degree loop upon itself, coming close enough to the upper level to require a short tunnel ( No. 15 )."
I recall that Tunnel # 14 is still wood - lined; as well it has the tightest clearances of any tunnel on the entire Siskiyou line. This tunnel is the reason Espee & now CORP cannot run any rail car with a clearance diagram exceeding Plate C over this portion of the line. Perhaps the monies will go towards fixing this problem.
Accessing the Right of Way in this area has been problematic in the past, as the local roads all end in many No Trespassing & Private Property signs. I get the feeling the local residents adhere to the rural theory of trespassing : " Shoot -- Shovel -- and Shut Up ". The one time I was able to access the Loop @ Steinman, I simply hiked in along the tracks from the Rest Area on Southbound Interstate 5. Perhaps the construction will allow more open access, for a while.
