Bakken crude is not the thick, tarry stuff
most people think of when they hear "crude
oil". It is thin and watery, like gasoline,
and contains several very volatile compounds
which make it very explosive. As a matter of
fact, it is the most volatile crude oil on
the planet, and must be handled with extreme
care. It also contains hydrogen sulfide,
which is quite corrosive. If the volatiles
and the H2S are removed before it is transported,
there will be much less chance any derailment
will lead to an explosion.
IMO, it is extremely irresponsible for anyone to
try to transport this Bakken crude without
removing said volatiles and the hydrogen sulfide
before that Bakken crude is transported -- and
by pipeline, too. I would even call if criminal.
