I'm no drone expert but this list of quadcopters might be of some use.

For the price, I'd spring for an Eye One Extreme, but I know a few railfans who use a DJI Phantom for a number of purposes, even 'chasing shots'. I should add the DJI Phantom 2 is discounted over on Amazon right now.
