Now I don't know why Al Perlman had the signals painted green. They looked kinda funny, but It sure was easy to tell which track was who's though. Mr Perlman also had new locomotives painted green, or green and orange. The green was in place of WP's silver. It was a very much darker green than the signals - darker than "hunter green" to my eye. The green and orange was a handsome scheme, but I never got used to it - missed the silver and orange of the "glory days".

As to the notion that WP got the signal paint from the navy - I suppose it's possible. In all my four years in the navy (late 60s) I never saw a ship that wasn't painted "Pea Green" on much of its interior. Same color all right (almost exactly). The image is burned into my eyes for ever. ---

And a few other places as well! Painting while underway in rough seas can be a real adventure - causes all kinds of things to happen. Paint gets everywhere, and in everything. Tastes nasty! To clean up the inevitable mess, we always used JP5 (jet fuel) as paint thinner. But that stuff gets all over too. One day, a sudden lurch threw my arse straight into the JP5 bucket. Now that stuff burrrnns like the hinges of hell when it gets in places it hadn't ougthta!
