There are faults "everywhere"
A good excuse but
The San Andreas makes a gap in the mountains- that's how hwy 138 gets to I-5
The tunnel proposal of the post-war 1940s respected that.
Two tunnels, one each north, and south of the gap
Voila, no tunnel thru the San Andreas.
