In early October 1982 I travelled overland on the Zephyr from Denver to SF, through Wyoming. After leaving Laramie it became apparent that something was up as there were no oncoming trains on the Doubled track. After refueling at Rawlins, somewhere west of there, we then started encountering oncoming trains running very closely spaced, then at some unremarked location we reduced to a crawl.
There was one heck of a mess of freight wagons scattered hither and yon, alongside the track we were running on, there was a breakdown train with either flats or gons carrying panel track sets. Even though by that time I was an Engindriver on NZR, I found it extremely interesting to see how they pushed everything to one side and got the line opened immediately. Down here in those days they dealt with each wagon one at a time at a derailment.
