We have a runaround track on our Molalla Branch that was put in in the late 70's that was built from 90# 33 foot panels. It was easiest due to space limitations to just build the grade and unload the panels and build the track from the mainline. We're still operating over it every day even with the square joints!

A reason that many times the derailed cars are shoved to the side is that (1) we need to get the line open...no trains...no revenue and (2) it's nice to have a track to reassemble the derailed cars on to get them away from the site.

Fortunately we haven't had to rerail many cars and there is something to be said for 10 mph operation when things do go sideways.
