George- UP continues the paired track arrangement they inherited from the SP and WP, using the ex-SP for westbound trains and the ex-WP for all eastbound trains. Outer limits for this arrangement are Alazon (just west of Wells) to Weso (just east of Winnemucca). Train counts are probably in the 25-30 a day range, down from previous years now that UP is running fewer but substantially longer trains. Most of the traffic uses the old SP east of Alazon and west of Winnemucca, though the WP west of Winnemucca is busier than the WP east of Alazon. In addition to the UP freights we have the usually nocturnal California Zephyr and BNSF trackage rights trains.
There are a handful of crossovers between the westbound and eastbound tracks, and it's not uncommon for trains to "switch over" to run against the prevailing direction from time to time, mostly to get around m-o-w work.
