Before this recent effort, the signals were one directional. Wasn't always that way- in one of the WP books mention was made of bi-directional signalling installed in at least a few stretches so that they had the ability to run against prevailing traffic as needed.

I understand UP is having a lot of issues with the causeway...however, that's not keeping them from routing the vast majority of traffic east of Wells over the SP. Operations on the WP from Salt Lake to Wells are at their lowest ebb almost ever...over the last year or more there has been only one dependable train on that route in daylight, the westbound Roper to Roseville manifest that can show up anytime between late morning and dusk. Eastbound Roseville to Roper runs after dark, as do Amtrak, and the only other trains on the line are periodic grainers, the coal trails for the Valmy and TS power plants, BNSF trackage rights trains, and occassional export coal or iron ore trains...but you're lucky to see one.
