And there are special profiles which wear uniformly, so that there is no (or limited need) for reprofiling; you more or less can run these wheels until they are worn down.
Also, tapered profiles make sure that the bogie remains stable; you get the sinus motion, but that is not hunting; hunting happens when the excitation is about the natural frequency of the sinus motion. This is likely to happen in north america on jointed rails, where the joints are staggered.
A well designed bogie for higher speed does, however, come with a damper.
Anyway, with non-tapered profiles, the wheels cannot self-guide, guiding has to be done by the flange (as it happens with streetcars using grooved rails). Of course at the price of higher wear.
