Edison and other California utilities messed around with Coal Gasification in the 90's and early 2000's (cleaner burning)
Besides the plant east of Wasco, there was another east of Daggett called Cool Water
that UP delivered coal on a regular basis, after Edison sold the plant during the DE-Regulation Fiasco it was converted to Natural Gas by the new owners.
I don't think any utility in California uses Gasification with Natural Gas being abundant.
