Espee kept coal - burning steam locomotives running in Southern Arizona and New Mexico as part of their buyout of the El Paso & South Western RR. The EP & SW's builder, Phelps Dodge, had extensive coal deposits in the area and required Espee to buy coal from them as part of the sale agreement. The 2-8-8-4 AC-9's, ( Conventional Articulateds nick-named " Gila Monsters " for the territory they ran on ), were built as coal - fired engines. Later on some would be converted to oil - fired for use on The Modoc line.
