First off, Oakland is the crew change point and the location for cutting in/outPVs. Second, it is also the location for some re-supply on the CS (and a far better location for same). Third, public transit to/from Oakland is better than Emeryville, particularly if you are on a late NB CS--my personal experience.
Cutting Martinez is a passenger hostile idea--it is convenient for a large population in Contra Costa County. Why make passengers drive from Concord (for example) clear into Oakland or Emeryville?
The "real" RRs added "suburban" stations because they saw them as encouraging ridership from areas not adjacent to the downtown terminals. UP ran advertising touting a newer east LA station for the City of LA because they saw a market.
As to a Talgo coach only train, no thank you. I may be the only one but I detest the Talgos which I have ridden in Oregon. The constant thudding noise from the suspension coupled with insufficiently reclining seats is unacceptable for anything more than a short commute. BTW, on my SLO trips, I opt for a roomette--nice nap each way and prepaid meals are a bargain given the current fare structure. The food could be better but until Micah is drawn and quartered...
