1) If you're off the grid, where's your battery? Storage has to be part of your system.
2) If you're off the grid, where's your backup generator (yes, burn some biodiesel or ethanol - a recently-stored form of solar energy - for essential loads after the battery runs down)?
3) If you're ON the grid, you don't really care. The power for your a/c comes from someplace. In CA and most of the west coast, it does NOT come from coal in any large quantity, and the advantage of the grid is that the wind might not be blowing where you are, but it likely is someplace else.
