On a trip I took on the Starlight in 2008, I spoke with Marty Scholdt, Amtrak's chief of onboard service. He told me that there were plans to reinstate the Daylight as trains 798 and 799 all the way from LA to SFO. Obviously nothing ever came of those plans.
