Agree re. severity of the event overall. If the mudflow can be cleared off the highway in a week or 2, it was locally, probably, a 1% or worse event, but not over the whole area.
If the railroad was running again a couple of days later (as it seems to have been, with some limitations), that's another indication that it wasn't a catastrophic event (1000-, or even 200-year). Early reports were, as usual, exaggerated.
Most of the news reports on the internet had pix of the highway. That's about all I saw.
