Tunnel 1/2 was bored after the floods of 1884. This same storm also washed out most of the line through Soledad Canyon, as did the 1932 storm. Tunnel 1/2 was daylighted after the storm of 1983; the material removed was used to repair and widen the Right of Way through the area for double track.
