The SMART DMUs are old sense FRA-compliant.

eBart DMUs are Stadler GTW, and therefore have energy absorbing elements and crumple zones.

Actually, the crumple zones, and energy absorbing elements do matter a lot on grade crossing accidents. Crash energy has to be dissipated, and not everything can go into the road vehicle.

There were several accidents in Europe where the energy absorbing elements and crumple zones did prevent much worse, and, more important, the vehicles remained upright.
