Also keep in mind that a radio receiver can be overloaded by a very strong nearby signal on a different frequency than the one you are trying to receive. Radio signal strength received is a function of the inverse square of the distance to the transmitter. Obviously the train is much nearer to you than the more distant signal you are trying to receive.
