There are many 2 band routers on the market, so most newer computers and i-thingies should be able to handle the 5 Ghz part. And other items can still be on the 2 Ghz.

In our case we have a cable modem with the built-in WiFi, but we used our own router. My aunt's computer is connected to her router via Cat-5 cable, in case the hideous 89 goes by on the SCMB tracks behind her house and gets equipped with WiFi! :)
