Thursday mornings are when the BNSF CDA local comes west on the old GN mainline to interchange with the Geiger spur. Our target time to meet them at the interchange is 9am, but this may be later depending on mainline meets, etc. Geiger spur train is on duty at 7am at Western Rail on McFarlane road with a target to be moving by 7:30 am. We (Geiger spur job) try to get to the interchange ahead of the CDA local but our timing is heavily dependent on how long it takes to gather and runaround the empties and whether we have to wait for Fairchild AFB guards to open the gates for us cross the base. We push the empties ahead of the locomotive, and can only run around 4 cars at a time. It takes us longer when we have to do a double or a triple runaround.
The interchange is right along US highway #2 just west of the main entrance to FAB; right where the railroad bridge crosses over the highway. Not a particularly good place for pictures.
This operation will change later this summer when the new bypass (eliminate running on the airbase) gets built and we will connect with the Eastern Washington Gateway (former CW branch) near Medical Lake. Construction should begin in June.
