OPD provided by far the most comprehensive and logical explanation for block spacing, and Chris (I think) provided the boiler plate truth: Faster speeds just means longer time in the parking lot. A crappy run can be, among many other things, characterized by constant stopping and starting, numerous speed changes and lots of color. Add to this hours of boredom seasoned with moments of shear terror. In my experience, getting out of the harbor into the trench while continuously moving- albeit at 30-40 MPH has always been far better than thinking you're in for the 'dash' running on clear blocks only to find you're four out at Soto.

It's funny; when I read the suggestion of 60-70 MPH in the trough I got all sucked up on the vinyl. I've never EVER believed those hand-crank(!) escape ladders would get me out (and into what? South Compton?) and having the Ethanol train pass me at 55 while we're running 60+ the other way in there is a very uncomfortable thought, indeed.

40's fine for me- just keep it moving!
