Great Bygone Freight Railroadin' Cities To Study

What are some of the great freight railroading cities that are worth researching and trying learn more about? I'm talking about cities with multiple railroads, freight car ferries, grand stations, beautiful scenery all that stuff. Port railroads as well as extensive spurs with single carload customers? Did Seattle have a vibrant railroad past in this way? I know San Francisco did. Where else? New York? Or was New York basically just a freight forwarding kind of operation?

Your thoughts are appreciated.
